This Girl...

...deserves an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in "The Descendants." Shailene Woodley is her name, and she steals every scene she's in. Her only major credits prior to this huge breakout role are the lead in ABC Family's "The Secret Life of an American Teenager," which I've never seen but might check out now (she plays a prego high schooler), and in a few initial episodes of "The O.C." as Mischa Barton's lil sis Kaitlin Cooper. Expect "The Descendants" to vault her career into the big leagues, and look for her on Oscar night.

The movie is fantastic, and she's the best thing about it, playing George Clooney's snotty daughter who comes of age right alongside her father when they're forced to cope with the fallout of her mother's sudden coma and the inevitability of death even while folding mama's dirty laundry. Woodley's underwater crying scene early on sealed the deal; you can tell she means business without any sense that she is acting, which is of course the marker of a great actor.

"The Descendants" will be in theaters from now through Oscar season, so you've got plenty of time. Just make sure you don't miss it.
