For December's edition of Paint monthly I have chosen the artist Pieter Bruegel the elder. He lived from 1525–1569 mainly in the Antwerp area. For many years I have loved his work. It was only when researching him for this post that I realised how early his paintings were.
My first recollections of his work come from Christmas cards that I remember as teenager . There was something special about the way he captured snow scenes and people at work and play. He was known as peasant Breugal because he dressed up as a peasant so that he could merge into a crowd of people and paint them inconspicuously.
As a people watcher myself, his work certainly resonates. Every aspect of 16th century life is documented into his amazing works of art. Children playing, people celebrating and working hard. As a history lover there is so much to interpret from his work.
I will leave you with a selection of his many paintings. Some with a very seasonal flavour.
Many thanks to everyone that added links last month. Gold star to Karen from Crimson Kettle for all her fabulous additions. I look forward to all the artwork that you contribute this month. Let's make it a good one. Maybe with a seasonal theme.
