Lewis Hamilton, three times world champion who took pole position had a faulty start which saw him in 6th position but he fought back to end up in second position.
Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel took an early lead. His gamble on super-soft tyres mid race failed as he took third position ahead of Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.
Nico stayed very close to Ferrari's Vettel. The race was stopped due to a terrifying accident between Alonso and Esteban Gutierrez of new team Haas on lap 17 which saw Alonso's right wheel tagged to the right rear of the Haas and then Alonso was launched into a barrell of rolls which saw him coming to rest upside down at the barriers.
Luckily, Alonso who was shaken by the incident came out with no injuries.
The race was stopped briefly following the accident but on restart, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel who was leading chose to remain on super soft tyres while Mercedes Nico Rosberg changed to medium tyres and stayed very close to Vettel and once Vettel stopped to pit in lap 35, Nico Rosberg burst into the lead and stayed that way till the end of the race.
Due to new restrictions of radio transmissions, Nico Rosberg was unaware of overheating brake problems and excessive wear on the left rear tyre but he managed to finish the race without any incidence.
Lewis Hamilton made a poor start but his race was made more difficult when teammate Rosberg edged him out to the edge of the track and he got lost three further places.
Nico Rosberg later apologised for the incidence.
After the accident between Alonso and Haas driver, Lewis was in 7th position but as the race started and other drivers stopped to pit he moved to second position.
Vettel stayed on Lewis Hamilton's tail six laps to the end of the race but Lewis was able to hold him off. Two laps to the end of the race Vettel spun on the grass and Lewis had a comfortable second position.
Nico Rosberg beat Lewis Hamilton with a comfortable 8 seconds gap.
